World of Warcraft Getting Started

Quick Start Information

In-Game Help System! - If you are new to the game, we recommend you take advantage of the in-game help system. By clicking on the flashing exclamation mark icon that appears at the bottom center of your screen you can learn how to complete various actions such as starting quests, initiating combat, searching bodies, and training your character.

If you should have any questions about anything on your interface, hold your mouse over the item to bring up a tool tip box with information on the relevant item.

To move in the game world, use the arrow keys. You can adjust your character's view using your mouse.

If you encounter an object, monster, or character that you can interact with, a smart cursor will appear near your mouse pointer to indicate that you can do so.

To select an object, monster, or character, left-click it. To interact with it, right-click it.

Read your Manual!

We highly suggest you take the time to read your World of Warcraft manual. It was written for new users and contains many things not mentioned in this guide.

Logging into the Game

Now that you have created your account, you can enter the game and begin playing. Once you start the game, you will be prompted to read and agree to our Terms of Use Agreement and End User License Agreement. At the login screen, please enter the login and password that you chose when you created your account.
Finally finished reading.
Now I can start playing.

Select Your Realm (server)

First you need to select your realm. You will need to contact your friends and pick the same realm so that you can all play together; characters on different realms cannot play with each other.
To learn more about what types of realms are available, please visit our Realm Type Guide here.

Once you login, you can create a character for yourself by choosing your race, appearance, and class. To learn more about classes before making your decision, please visit our World of Warcraft Classes Guide here.

Choose the realm you wish to play on.

Horde vs. Alliance Split

The Horde is battling the Alliance in the world of Azeroth. Horde and Alliance players are unable to group/party with each other, trade, create guilds, or even talk to each other. If you wish to play with other friends, make sure you select races that are allied with each other. You can have characters on your account of either Horde or Alliance faction on the Player vs. Environment servers. On Player vs. Player servers you can only have either Horde or Alliance characters but not both. You and your friends must choose whether you all will create Alliance or Horde characters to play together. When selecting your race we suggest you first read about the racial bonuses.

Horde Races: Alliance Races:
Orcs
Tauren
Trolls
Undead
Humans
Dwarves
Gnomes
Night Elves

Creating Your Character

Creating your character is very easy. Select your race, sex, and class. Be reminded that players of the Horde and Alliance will not be able to play with each other.

Character Customization

You can customize various aspects of your character. If you find this takes too much time, simply click the "randomize" button to have the game create a random character for you. Hit this button several times until it creates a character that you like. The game will offer other methods of character customization in game.

Create your name

You will have to stay with this name for the rest of your playing career so make sure that you create a name that you can live with. Be aware of the naming policy so that you do not risk having to rename your character or other penalties.
Now enter the world.

Now you're in the World of Warcraft!

A Note on Dying
Maybe I should die more often.
In the event that you die in World of Warcraft, you will become a ghost and be transported to a nearby graveyard. You will have to run back to your corpse to revive yourself. Look to your minimap for directions to your corpse. Read more here.

Paging a Game Master (GM)

If you need assistance at any time while you are in the game, please do not hesitate to contact a Game Master (GM). Our GMs are online to assist you should you encounter any problem. To contact a GM, please do the following:

Click on the Request Help button on the Interface Panel at the bottom of your screen. It's the one that looks like a red question mark (?).

Select the Issues that GMs can Assist With button.

Choose a category that encompasses your problem.

Type in your problem and click Submit.

A ticket will appear on your screen. A GM will contact you shortly thereafter to help you resolve your situation.

Contacting Support

If you should experience any problems related to your account or gameplay experience while you are logged out of the game, please contact our customer and technical support staff.
